Branding Development for Fingers
When Dr. David Mayor, an orthopedic hand surgeon, saw how traditional buddy splints hindered healing and made application difficult, he set out to design something better. The result was Digimate—a finger splint that prioritizes both comfort and functionality. Unlike conventional options, Digimate allows for natural movement of uninjured fingers while protecting the injured one, offering patients a more anatomical, effective healing experience.
A Finger Splint…That’s Cool?
Tekna’s brand department and I collaborated closely to name both the flagship product and its parent company. We landed on “Digimate” to highlight the product’s role as a dependable companion for your digits. For the parent brand, we chose “KANDS,” a concise, memorable name that ties directly to hands and surgery. The goal was to build a brand that could speak to both patients and professionals, especially within the fast-paced world of sports medicine, where recovery and performance go hand in hand. From there, we went through the full naming and logo design process, establishing a consistent, professional look and feel across both brands. This included crafting visual identities that aligned with the product’s innovation—clean, modern, and trustworthy.
Pushing it Farther
After the initial naming and logo creation, Dr. Mayor asked us to expand the brand’s presence through a website and product packaging. I led a cohesive photo shoot centered on real-world usability, capturing diverse scenarios—from athletic activity to hands-on tasks in the workshop and everyday routines. The goal was to emphasize the comfort, durability, and flexibility of the Digimate splints in all aspects of life. Building on that visual story, I designed a clean, informative website to introduce the product and brand, along with a YouTube channel to support video content. Packaging was also developed with a modern, medical look to ensure Digimate stood out both online—particularly on Amazon—and on the shelves of local pharmacies and health stores. As part of the Amazon launch, I created custom product images, infographics, and A+ content to clearly communicate the benefits and features of the splint in a compelling, consumer-friendly way.
“Make it Brighter” - Digimate 2.0
About a year after the initial launch, Dr. Mayor returned to our team requesting a strategic brand refresh. Through research and market analysis, he discovered that top competitors in the buddy splint space leaned less into rugged, athletic branding and more into themes of wellness, beauty, and self-care. These brands emphasized healing, calm, and personal wellbeing—resonating with a broader, more lifestyle-oriented audience. To better align Digimate with this evolving market, we worked to refine the brand’s tone and visual direction. The result was a softer, more inviting look and feel. We introduced brighter, calming color palettes and redesigned branded assets to evoke a sense of health, care, and trust.
At the same time, the product itself underwent an evolution. A softer, more flexible fabric was introduced, making the updated buddy splint not only more comfortable for fingers, but also suitable for use on toes. This opened up new applications for the product, and the refreshed brand helped support this expansion by appealing to a broader customer base and a wider range of use cases.
A Lighter, Softer Appearance
Ready to Make a Difference
The final product was a bright, airy, and professional brand that speaks to a broader, more wellness-focused audience. The updated packaging is both simple and versatile—designed to highlight the product’s core benefits while remaining neutral enough to appeal across demographics. Its form factor and clarity make it easy to store and display on clinicians’ shelves, warehouse racks, and retail spaces alike. With its refreshed identity and expanded usability, Digimate is well-positioned to stand out in both medical and consumer markets. I led the creation of this Gen 2.0 brand, from website design and packaging to photography, video, and Amazon assets. Every element was crafted to emphasize both comfort and function—two qualities at the heart of Digimate’s mission. Today, David Mayor continues to bring the product to new markets, working to make a meaningful impact for people around the world.
